History
The athensultimate.com site was revamped in the fall of 2005 after being defunct for several years (thanks go to Glenn Leavell for keeping the domain alive during that time). The text below is from the old version of the site (late 90's). Note that both the men's and women's teams are still going strong, with the men having a very strong B-team program as well as a third team. Some highlights:
2008, 2007, 2006~, 2005, 2003, 1996+, 1995+, 1994+, 1993, 1991+, 1990, 1987, 1986 Nationals Appearances by UGA women's team: 2006+, 2003+, 2002, 2001**, 2000~, 1999~+, 1998+, 1997+ **=National Champions; ~=National Semis; +=Region Champions Ultimate has been in Athens since the late 70's. Tony Eubanks helped form the first UGA ultimate team. He ran the summer league, where most ultimate players from this town have learned the game. Tony also started an Athens tournament, Ultimate Bowl, so that local players wouldn't have to travel so far all the time to play other teams. Get the teams to come to us! Brilliant! Since then the UGA team has grown and over the years has been to several national championship tournaments. In addition to the revived Ultimate Bowl, Athens is now host to two more tournaments each year (Seven Little Idiots and the Classic City Classic). More recently, a college women's team has formed, and in the last two years the "Ho-Dawgs" have finished 4th and 3rd in the country in the college women's division! A Fall League was formed for college players, and last year the men's club (JoJah Ultimate) had a B-team (called "The A-team"). Both the men's and women's teams also have coaches now. Much of this recent work has been done through the efforts of the college teams, and Will Deaver has picked up where Tony left off with organizing ultimate in Athens. What's the point of all this? The point is that this is a great town for ultimate! We have access to fantastic fields, athletic/health-conscious individuals, and folks who like the slightly alternative style of self-officiated competition. It's time there was an organization set up so that ultimate can continue to grow here, and so the fate of ultimate events and activities in Athens will rest on a group rather than one chance individual with a little too much time on his hands... |
